An artist’s touch with a beginner’s price

March 11, 2010

Makeup brushes can get rather costly, especially at over $20 a pop from higher end makeup brushes. But did you know that you can use paint brushes as makeup brushes as well?

Michael’s Craft Store carries a wide variety of paint brushes at very low prices. One brand in particular, carries exceptional brushes that are almost exact dupes of MAC brushes.

Loew Cornell puts out well made, high quality paint brushes that run from $2-$18 and are meant to last a lifetime, if taken care of properly. The Maxine’s Mop line by Loew Cornell comes in several sizes and each one works great for different makeup tasks.

The smaller brushes make great eyeshadow, smude, or eyeliner brushes and the larger ones work great for the face as ann all-over powder brush or for blush, highlighter or contour.

The Maxine’s Mop 1/4 brush resembles MAC’s 228 Mini Shader Brush, the 2/3 brush is an exact dupe of MAC’s 239 Eye Shader Brush and the 3/4 brush is similar in size to MAC’s 168 Large Angled Contour Brush, although it is a completely different shape.

Here is a comparison of the Loew Cornell Maxine’s Mop 3/4 Brush and the MAC 168 Large Angled Contour Brush:

So if you are looking for a less expensive alternative in makeup brushes check out the artist’s section at craft stores. You may just find some great makeup brushes, and at much lower prices!
