Easy Iced Matcha Latte Recipe

Confession: I might have a slight addiction to Starbucks’ iced matcha lattes. If you haven’t had one, you’ve really been missing out. About 6 months ago, I gave up coffee in an effort to better control my caffeine intake and to reduce the number of issues high levels of caffeine were causing (I’ll post more on that soon). So green tea was the next best way to get my caffeine fix for the day without having to drink coffee.

Side note – did you know green tea is high in the amino acid L-theanine? This has a calming effect and aids with concentration. Again, more on that soon. But aside from health benefits, I just really love the taste of matcha green tea. So when I found out Starbucks had a green tea latte on their menu, I had to try it. And OMG. The best green tea latte I’ve ever had. But at almost $5 a pop (yes, I was drinking these almost daily), I figured I’d try and find a way to make them at home. So after digging through numerous recipes and dupes, I actually found out that Starbucks’ version of matcha powder is a combination of matcha and sugar. Um, what? Yeah. SUGAR. No wonder why I was addicted! This thing was straight up diabetes juice! Ok, I’m being dramatic. Needless to say, I stopped drinking them cold turkey that day. So I came up with my own easy iced matcha latte recipe that’s just as delicious without the insane amounts of sugar.

So I came up with my own easy iced matcha latte recipe that’s just as delicious without the insane amounts of sugar.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup Almond Milk (coconut milk is also delicious!)
2 tsp Matcha Powder
1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract (optional)
1 tsp stevia (or any sweetener of choice)
3 tbsp hot water
1 cup Ice

 

DIRECTIONS

  1. Pour the matcha powder and hot water (not boiling) into a mixing cup and mix using a bamboo whisk. Whisk rapidly to break up any lumps. Whisk until matcha is completely dissolved.
  2. Pour in the almond milk, sweetener and vanilla extract. Whisk until frothy.
  3. Add ice to your cup/tumbler of choice. This tumbler is a personal favorite for lattes on the go.
  4. Pour latte over ice. Sip, enjoy!

PRO TIP: you could also skip the hot water if in a hurry. Use a mason jar with a lid, add all ingredients including ice, place the lid on the jar and shake until everything is mixed. Super easy, right?
