The Chop

April 28, 2015

When I heard there was a new Aveda hair salon opening in Dallas (Preston Hollow, to be specific) I knew I had to check it out. Luckily, Tangerine Salon reached out to me letting me know of their grand opening and offering to try out their services. I was giddy with excitement when they agreed to have me come in and get my mane chopped.
I’ve managed to let my hair grow out for the last four years and it’s just been… long. I usually just get a trim, cutting a few inches off at a time and before I know it, it’s back to the original length I had it. I was growing bored of it and while most women think there are endless possibilities with long hair, the reality is I almost never did my hair. I have a LOT of hair. It is thick, curly/wavy and requires a lot of maintenance. It used to take me about 45 minutes to straighten then curl my hair, about 30 minutes just to straighten, and about 5 minutes to throw it up in a bun. I think it’s obvious which styling choice I opted for most of the time.
So after pondering on it for some time, and seeing all of the chic, long bobs out there, I decided I wanted to go for it. Plus, a new hairdo is always liberating. A fresh start, if you will.

The two-level salon is absolutely stunning. It reminded me so much of the chic, high-end salons in Beverly Hills that I almost forgot I was in Dallas! The second I walked in I was immediately greeted with a warm smile and felt at ease. The staff is incredibly attentive, even offering a complimentary service such as a stress-relieving head and shoulders massage or a mini-facial. Among the extra services they also serve complimentary ice tea (from Trader Joe’s!), coffee, and chocolate which was a nice little surprise.
I was paired with master stylist, Marshall Hatley, who is literally a miracle worker. Ladies (and gents), do yourselves a favor and book your appointment today because he does absolute wonders with hair. I honestly don’t think I can ever let anyone else touch my locks. I’m hooked.
We immediately clicked and he was almost more excited than I was to totally transform my hair. I told him what I was looking for and showed him a few pics for some ideas and he immediately got to work starting with 3 ponytails that were chopped off!

Once the length of the hair was gone, the coloring started and he used a technique called backcombing using Aveda Blonde Finish that gave a more dramatic effect than balayage, also known as hair painting, which is exactly what I was going for. The whole process was much faster than I expected and he did a phenomenal job. I LOVE this new hair style and it is exactly what I was going for. He completely nailed it and I can’t wait for a follow up appointment to go even lighter!

If you live in the DFW area, or even if you’re visiting, you can make an appointment at the new Preston Hollow Tangerine Salon and book with a stylist today. With summer almost here, why not try a lighter, sun kissed color or a shorter bob! You can see all my hair inspiration on my Pinterest board here if you’re looking for ideas.
For those looking to chop off their long locks like I did, you can donate your hair to Wigs for Kids, a non-profit organization that provides Hair Replacement Systems and support for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, Alopecia, Trichotillomania, burns and other medical issues at no cost to children or their families.
A special thanks to Tangerine Salon for creating such a warm and welcoming experience and giving me the perfect new do!
