The New Do and Pravana Vivids Review

February 4, 2010

For the last year or so I have been in a sort of rut and seriously needed to spruce up my life with some color, both literally and figuratively. So I went for the easiest route to shake things up: my hair. And what crazy thing did I do you might be asking? Well…lol. I went purple! Ok, so not entirely. But I put purple highlights throughout my already dyed black hair, and I am loving it! It is just the thing I needed. Here is the before and after…

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I bleached streaks all over my whole head using Beyond the Zone On/Off Scalp Radical Bleach Kit that I had picked up from Sally’s Beauty Supply, although it took three rounds of bleach to get it light enough (Disclaimer: I do NOT recommend bleaching your hair this many times.) After each round of bleach I rinsed my hair and deep conditioned in order to prevent my hair from falling out. Once the bleaching process was complete I began slapping (and I literally mean slapping since I pretty much just carelessly slopped purple dye all over my head) the dye with a hair dye brush and luckily it came out perfect. The most amazing thing was that wherever I put the purple dye on unbleached sections of my hair it just turned out black, so there was no need to redye my roots black again. Strange, but perfect.
I used Pravana Chroma Silk Vivids in Violet. This stuff is amazing and is hands down the best unnatural hair color dye I have ever come across. It is SUPER bright and truly a vivid purple. But the best part about this stuff is that it is permanent so it isn’t nearly as big of a hassle as other semi-permanent dyes such as Manic Panic.
Pravana Chroma Silk Vivids
PROS:

  • Easy to use, no foils required
  • Has incredible staying power, long lasting
  • Leaves hair incredibly soft and shiny due to silk and keratin protein
  • Less harsh than other hair dyes or vegetable dyes (will not dry out hair)
  • Reasonable price

CONS:

  • Stains like crazy (must wear gloves, have bleach ready to clean shower or sink)

Overall: I loved the Pravana Vivids hair dye. It made my hair look and feel healthier and it was the perfect shade of purple I was looking for. I will definitely repurchase this when the time comes and I highly recommend it to anyone who hates the upkeep of semi-permanent unnatural hair dyes.

Have you ever used Pravana Vivids? Do you have any recomendations for any other unnatural hair dyes? Please share and leave a comment below!

Thanks for the review, I am considering a few of these colors.. but I must get from black, first. Oh yes, I realize this is an old post BUT you can purchase Pravana products ($8 for the vivid dyes) @ http://www.extendedlengths.com / I haven't ordered yet but have been researching for a few hours honestly and have heard that it's a great dye, low price, only downside I heard was someone saying they are terrible with shipping as in slow and unresponsive to emails. But it does arrive!

The color definitely does run for about a week after dying it. It also runs if you sweat a lot, but not that bad. If you get it on your skin hand sanitizer works to get it off. But, overall Pravana is the best stuff around, I've used four different colors and they all work great!

I'm really late to comment, but…
your hair looks awesome! I'm thinking of using this brand and wondered if the color runs when wet like most unnatural semi-permanent dyes (Manic Panic, etc)? Thanks, -C
